Located on Mobile Bay in Southwest Alabama, Mobile is the second largest metro area in the state and the largest city on the Gulf Coast between Houston and Tampa, Fla.

The region includes Mobile and Baldwin counties, covers 2,829 square miles of land area and has a population of 554,258 (2000 Census).

Mobile’s market area is composed of seven counties in Alabama, three counties in Florida and one county in Mississippi, combining more than 1.3 million residents in the 11-county area.

More than 22,000 businesses make Mobile County a center for finance, healthcare, education, manufacturing, transportation, construction, distribution, retail trade and technology. In May 2007, employment stood at 183,200, with unemployment below state and national levels at 3.2 percent. The 11-county direct market area combines a total civilian labor force of more than 608,000.
